McLeod Ganj Diary - I

Our destination on this trip was McLeod Ganj, the seat of the Tibetan Government in Exile and home to His Highness the Dalai Lama. The ISBT at Kashmiri Gate was as crowded and chaotic as ever but we left on time on a Himachal State Transport bus to Dharamsala. The route to Dharamsala followed the Grand Trunk Road upto Ambala, on the oustkirts of which we had dinner at a highway mall. We passed the outskirts of Panchkula, leaving the road to Shimla just before Kalka. Then, we travelled through Una, Nangal and Bharwain before a bad stretch of highway woke us up in the wee hours of the morning.
The road wound its way around the mountains as we watched the sun slowly rise behind the rocky peaks. Soon enough we entered the valley of Kangra and the eponymous town. As we crossed the town travelling north we could see the whole chain of the snow topped Dhauladhar Range to the east. Dharamsala is a dusty north indian town located in the Kangra valley just by the foothills. Kotwali bazaar is the main throughfare and the center of the town and the only other nucleus is the HPCA stadium located on a small hill. Upper Dharamsala is also known as McLeod Ganj and it lies on a ridge. We deboarded at the Dharamsala bus stand and travelled up to McLeod Ganj.
